SHENYANG - Thailand, Chinese Taipei and Kazakhstan won their respective first gold medals when the 2025 Asian Rowing U19 and U23 Championships concluded here Sunday afternoon.
Among the trio, Thailand triumphed twice, with a golden sweep of U23 Single Sculls in both genders within half an hour.
In the men’s event, Phasin CHUEATAI sped up since 500 meters, surging to the finish line in 6:55.08, three seconds ahead of Indonesian runner-up Maulana Rendi Setia. Rawinwan SUKKAEW led the 2,000m course throughout, winning the women’s title, the second gold for Thailand at the Championships.
“I feel very happy, because it’s my last year competing in U23 category. And our men player also won the gold in his event (men’s single sculls). It’s not easy because Thailand only sent four players and two coaches for the championships this year,”said Rawinwan.
Chinese Taipei had its first gold medal through HSIEH Shou-yang and HUANG Shr-kuei in the U19 Men’s Double Sculls. They rowed hard to catch up with the Iranian, their strong opponents next lane, and overtook the lead during the last 500 meters.
Kazakhstanencountered a twist in winning its first gold medal from the U19 Men’s Coxless Pair by racing twice following an appeal from an undisclosed concerned team. Batyr MADIYEV and Dmitriy ANUPRIYEV crossed the finish line first in both races, beating Uzbekistan to second twice. And China overtook Vietnam for the bronze medal in the second and final race.
Vietnam who won six of the first 12 golds on Saturday, repeated its feat by taking six more on Sunday to lead the medal tally with 12 out of the 24 golds offered during the two-day finals, due to the absence of China in all 12 U23 events who won 13 out of the 20 golds last year.
Uzbekistan collected two more golds on Sunday to rank second with 5 golds to rank second overall, followed by China and Thailand with 2 golds apiece. Chinese Taipei, Kazakhstanand Iran took one gold each.
The 2025 Championships saw seven teams winning gold medals, three more teams compared to the 2024 edition.
